What is a Travel Consent Letter ?

A minor travel consent form or travel consent letter for children who are traveling outside of Canada, is a legal document that provides proof, that the child has permission from their parents or legal guardians to travel internationally. This letter is especially important, when children are traveling alone, with only one parent or guardian, or with someone who is not their parent or legal guardian.

Here's what a travel consent letter for a minor typically includes:

  1. Personal details of the child - full name, date of birth, and passport number if available. Although,  a child is defined differently from from country to country, typically any child under 19 years old should carry a consent letter.
  2. Personal details of the parent or legal guardian giving consent - full name, relationship to the child, and contact information.
  3. Details of the person accompanying the child, if not the parent or legal guardian - full name, relationship to the child, and contact information.
  4. Details of the destination country, dates of travel, and purpose of the trip.
  5. A statement confirming that the parent or legal guardian giving consent understands the travel arrangements and gives permission for the child to travel.
  6. Signature of the parent or legal guardian giving consent, along with the date.

The letter  should be signed by the parent or legal guardian who is giving consent for the child to travel. This could be one parent if the child has only one legal guardian, or both parents if the child has joint custody. If the child is traveling with someone who is not their parent or legal guardian, such as a grandparent or teacher, the consent letter should be signed by both the parent or legal guardian and the person accompanying the child.

A letter of consent for a child to travel with one parent or grandparents is not a requirement for all countries, however, it's always a good idea to have an original copy as a backup, in case it is requested by immigration officials at the border.  Additionally, in the event, that the original has been lost or damaged, it's best to make extra copies and carry it with you during your travel.

Some countries may also require that the signature be notarized, so it's always best to check with the relevant authorities for specific requirements for the destination country. You should also note that this letter be updated regularly, especially if there's any changes in the child's, parent or legal guardian's circumstances.
